Shah Rukh Khan's Deewana Returns After Two Decades

Over two decades ago, Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) kick-started his Bollywood journey with Deewana. The 1992 blockbuster boasted of many feats to its credit. It was not only the second highest grosser of the year, but its chartbuster soundtrack also went on to create huge waves in cine-circles, fetching the music maestros Nadeem-Shravan their third Filmfare Award in a row, after Aashiqui (1990) andSaajan (1991).

Though Khan wasn't the solo hero in the musical romance drama, his promising acting credentials were applauded by the viewers and critics alike.

Now in the era of remakes and sequels, producer Guddu Dhanoa too wishes to capitalize on the unbeaten formulas.

When asked whether the new Deewana would be a remake or a sequel, Dhanoa informed PTI that their next venture would be more of a sequel, but with a different love story this time around. The producer also notified that they have decided to use the title as it is, and will add something to it. He further said that his project will be on the similar lines as the Bhatts have treated their thriving creations, Murder and Jannat.

Deewana will have a complete new star-cast, which has yet to be finalized.

While we wait to hear from the makers about another shot of announcements regarding the film's cast, we wonder if they would have our King Khan and versatile Rishi in this one also.

Directed by Raj Kanwar and co-produced by Lalit Kapoor with Dhanoa, the older flick had Rishi Kapoor and late actress Divya Bharti in pivotal roles, apart from SRK.

Bollywood's most loved villain Pran passes away after prolonged illness

Mumbai - Veteran Bollywood actor Pran Krishan Sikhand, who played the dreaded villain and lovable character with elan in hits like 'Milan', 'Madhumati', 'Bobby', Zanjeer and 'Ram Aur Shyam', passed away at Leelavati hospital here on Friday  evening at the age of 93.
"He died after a spell of prolonged illness," his daughter Pinky said. He was admitted to Lilavati Hospital a month ago after his health started deteriorating, she said.
His funeral will be held tomorrow noon at Shivaji Park in Dadar.
The veteran actor, who had a six-decade-long career that saw him performing in over 400 films, was conferred the country's highest cinema honour - the Dada Saheb Phalke award - in April.
Pran left his imprint as a villain with powerful roles in films like 'Kashmir ki Kali', 'Khandaan', 'Aurat', 'Bari Behen', 'Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai', 'Half Ticket', 'Upkar', 'Purab Aur Paschim', 'Don' 'Karz' and 'Naseeb'.
Born on February 12, 1920 in old Delhi, Pran Krishan Sikand was educated at places like Kapurthala, Unnao, Meerut, Dehradun and Rampur as his father Lala Kewal Krishnan Sikand was in government service.

Initially, Pran wanted to become a photographer but destiny had different plans for him. A chance meeting with a film producer got him his first break in Punjabi film 'Yamla Jat' in 1940.
There was no looking back for the actor after that as he went on to star in films like 'Chaudhary' (1941), 'Khandan' (1942), 'Kaise Kahun' (1945) and 'Badnami (1946).
After Partition, Pran came to Mumbai with his wife Shukla and sons Arvind and Sunil but found it difficult to get work as an actor in the city of dreams.
Pran had almost given hope when writer Saadat Hasan Manto helped him get a role in Dev Anand starrer 'Ziddi' in 1948 which revived his career.
He will be forever remembered for bringing villains on par with the heroes, ruling the industry from 1969 to 1982. He commanded equal money and respect for his negative characters in 'Madhumati', 'Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai', 'Ram Aur Shyam' and 'Devdas'.
The actor's baritone and good looks helped him bring charm to his villainy which was very unique to Pran. Such was the magic of his onscreen roles that parents stopped naming their children 'Pran' at the height of his fame.
His chameleon-like ability helped Pran transform himself from one of the most hated onscreen villains to one of the most beloved character actors - be it the 'Mangal chacha' in 'Upkar', Sher Khan of opposite Amitabh Bachchan in 'Zanjeer' or the discipline-loving but soft-hearted grandfather in Gulzar's 'Parichay'.
Prior to his film career, the actor wanted to become a professional photographer and worked as an apprentice with a company.
This job took him to Shimla, where he played the role of Sita in a local staging of 'Ramlila'. He happened to meet writer, Wali Mohammad Wali, who worked for producer Dalsukh M. Pancholi in Lahore. This eventually led to Pran's entry into the film industry.
He acted in a few Punjabi films before entering Bollywood with Sunil Dutt-Nutun starrer super hit film 'Khandan' (1965).
His contribution in comedy movies also didn't go unnoticed with some side-splitting performances in 'Sadhu Aur Shaitaan', 'Chham Chama Chham', 'Half Ticket' and 'Bewaqoof' and others.
It was reported that in the 70s, Pran was among the highest paid actors in Indian cinema, ahead of his co-stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna.
Pran married Shukla Ahluwalia in 1945 and has two sons, Arvind and Sunil and a daughter, Pinky.

Nishabd actress Jiah Khan commits suicide

Bollywood actress Jiah Khan allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Mumbai, police said.

The 25-year-old actress reportedly hanged herself at her Juhu residence late last night.

According to the police her maid, watchman and neighbours are being interrogated to find out her last visitors.

Jiah Khan made her acting debut in the controversial Ram Gopal Varma's Nishabd where she acted opposite megastar Amitabh Bachchan. Related: Amitabh, B'wood shocked by Jiah's suicide

Upon its release in March 2007, the film received mixed reviews, but Jiah Khan was noted for her confidence, attitude, and sex appeal.

She also got a Filmfare Best Debutant nomination for her bold role in the movie.

Jiah then appeared alongside Aamir Khan in A R Murugadoss's Ghajini, the Hindi remake of the director's own Tamil film of the same name.

Later she appeared as a supporting actress in Sajid Khan's multi-starrer comedy film Housefull (2010). This was her last film.

Jiah, whose original name was Nafisa Khan, changed her name before making her film debut in Nishabd in 2007.

In 2012, she changed her name back to Nafisa Khan.

Jiah Khan's mother and sister had gone out and she was alone at the house when the incident happened, police said.

"Jiah's mother and sister found her hanging when they returned at around 11 PM," police said, adding that Jiah Khan used her own dupatta to hang herself.

Ranbir-Deepika's YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI set for a record opening day!

'YJHD' is Ranbir Kapoor's biggest opening
The bumper opening of Ranbir-Deepika's, YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI, comes as no surprise to us, as we had been predicting it for a while now. It was around six weeks back, 17th April to be precise, when we had predicted a big start for the Ayan Mukerji directed YJHD (Check out -Ranbir Kapoor -Deepika Padukone's YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWAN to open big!).

To cut a long story short, the Ayan Mukerji directed, YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI, saw a magical start in the range of 90-100 percent at the multiplexes across the country with Delhi city and many screens of NCR seeing extraordinary collections. In fact, YJHD was expected to falter at the single screens, but here too the opening ranged from 50-75 percent. Though the collections fluttered a bit during the midafternoon, the film picked up again in the latter shows.

Given the high cinema count (3000 plus) and 1070 UFO screens, YJHD is expected to see a record breaking first day, beating Ranbir's best opening day record (RAAJNEETI- which netted 11 crore) by about 6-7 crores.

'Life of pie' wins 4 Oscar awards

Los Angeles: Taiwanese-American Ang Lee beat master directors like Steven Spielberg and Michael Haneke to take home the best director Oscar for "Life of Pi", his visually stunning 3D tale of an Indian boy adrift in the ocean for months with a Bengal tiger.

With his second Oscar win, Lee brings focus back to India, whose culture and ethos are an important part of the narrative and unlike previous Academy-winner "Slumdog Millionaire" which earned some brickbats for promoting slum porn, Lee has presented Pondicherry and Munnar beautifully through his 3D lenses.

Lee, 58, beat Spielberg ("Lincoln"), Haneke ("Amour"), David O Russell ("Silver Linings Playbook") and indie filmmaker Benh Zeitlin ("Beasts of the Southern Wild") to win his second Academy in the directing category.

"I really need to share this with everybody who worked in 'Life of Pi'. I need to thank Yann Martel for writing this marvelous book...," Lee said in his speech before ending it with a 'Namaste'.

The auteur, a five-time Oscar nominee, previously won the trophy for his 2005 gay cowboys drama "Brokeback Mountain".

Like "Life of Pi", his "Crouching Tiger, Hiden Dragon" was nominated for best picture and directing honours.

In the film, an adaptation of Martel's Booker-prize winning novel, Lee took on the challenge of filming the movie, mostly set in the ocean, with an almost entirely Indian casts of newcomer Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Tabu and Adil Hussain.

Actress Vidya Balan and Disney ( UTV Motion Pictures) CEO, Siddharth Roy Kapur finally tied the knot today morning in a very private affair.

Not just the media, even Bollywood celebrities were not a part of the marriage festivities. The wedding was kept a very private affair with only family members and close friends present. Earlier this week, the couple had hosted a private family dinner, followed by a mehendi ceremony on December 12.

There was quite confusion on the venue of the marriage ceremony. Some reports suggested that it happened in Bandra but latest updates reveal that it happened in a temple in Chembur. Vidya Balan's residence is also at Chembur. Sources reveal that Vidya was wearing a sari designed by her favourite designer, Sabyasachi.

The wedding functions of sangeet and mehendi were attended by family members - Vidya's parents Saraswathy and P R Balan. The actress' elder sister Priya and brother-in-law Kedar.

A tweet from UTV Stars: "Bollywood Vidya Balan married Siddharth Roy Kapoor earlier in the morning today! We wish them a happy married life!"

Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar dies at 92 in California

Indian sitar maestro Ravi Shankar has died in a hospital in the US, aged 92.
His family said he had been admitted to the Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego last week, but had failed to recover fully from surgery.
Shankar gained widespread international recognition through his association with The Beatles.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described him as a "national treasure and global ambassador of India's cultural heritage".
In a statement quoted by Reuters, Shankar's wife Sukanya and daughter Anoushka said he had recently undergone surgery which would have "potentially given him a new lease of life".
"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the surgeons and doctors taking care of him, his body was not able to withstand the strain of the surgery," they said.
"We were at his side when he passed away.
"Although it is a time for sorrow and sadness, it is also a time for all of us to give thanks and to be grateful that we were able to have him as a part of our lives. He will live forever in our hearts and in his music."
Ravi Shankar teaches George Harrison the sitar
Anoushka Shankar is herself a sitar player. Shankar's other daughter is Grammy award winning singer Norah Jones.
'Respect for music'
George Harrison of the Beatles once called Shankar "the godfather of world music".
He played at Woodstock and the 1967 Monterey Pop festival, and also collaborated with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and jazz saxophonist John Coltrane.
Shankar also composed a number of film scores - notably Satyajit Ray's celebrated Apu trilogy (1951-55) and Richard Attenborough's Gandhi (1982) - and collaborated with US composer Philip Glass in Passages in 1990.
Ravi Shankar promoted India and and Indian music to the world, his influence in western music was inspirational, he went on to win Grammy's, the nomination for an Oscar for Gandhi in 1982 and various accolades.
He also pioneered the concept of the rock benefit with the 1971 Concert For Bangladesh. To later generations, he was known as the estranged father of popular American singer Norah Jones.
Shankar collaborated with Harrison, violinist Yehudi Menuhin and jazz saxophonist John Coltrane as he worked to bridge the musical gap between the West and East.
He was a hippie musical icon of the 1960s. He played Woodstock and hobnobbed with The Beatles.
Beatle George Harrison labelled him "the godfather of world music".
Talking in later life about his experiences at the influential Monterey Pop festival, Ravi Shankar said he was "shocked to see people dressing so flamboyantly".
He told Rolling Stone magazine that he was horrified when Jimi Hendrix set his guitar on fire on stage.
"That was too much for me. In our culture, we have such respect for musical instruments, they are like part of God," he said.
In 1999, Shankar was awarded the highest civilian citation in India - the Bharat Ratna, or Jewel of India.

From Talaash to Talaash, Kareena's extraordinary turnaround

Kareena Kapoor must be basking in the glory of Taalash's success for now. But, many may not be aware that back in 2003 she had done a film, which was also titled 'Taalash'.

The Suneel Darshan-directed film had Akshay Kumar in the lead role, in which Kareena was supposedly a glamorous character named Tina. However, her appearance in the film was pretty shoddy as evident from the movie’s stills. Not surprisingly, the film went on to become a major disaster at the box office.

From then till now, however, Kareena has come a really long way, and today is one of the most sought after actresses in the industry. Not only has she improved her acting skills, but has also worked exceedingly on her on-screen looks. The contrasting pictures of her two ‘Talaash’ films say it all.

For Kareena Kapoor it could be an Outlier moment as when she had enacted the role of a hooker for the first time in CHAMELI she had taken her first step forward towards stardom and as an actor to watch out for. After her marriage, TALAASH could turn out to be her consolidation status moment of her standing in the industry.

Kareena Kapoor manages to hold Rosy’s mysterious aura quite well. One scene – when she tells Suri about her missing friend – particularly stands out for just how perfectly she allows only a sliver of sorrow to show on her face.

Without doubt, Kareena’s ‘hunt’ for success has borne fruit.

Talaash crosses Rs 100 cr mark at worldwide Box Office

Director Reema Kagti's latest venture Talaash starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee in leads, has fetched fantastic collection figures at the global Box Office in the first week. The psychological suspense thriller has surpassed Rs 100 crore mark at the collection centres worldwide in seven days.

Talaash, which was released in 2,600 screens on November 30 after six months delay, started with a bang at the Indian Box Office on Friday and its business went upwards over weekend. The movie raked in Rs 47.1 crores nett in the first weekend. Its collection dropped considerably on weekdays with the film adding Rs 20.8 crores to its seven days total Rs 67.9 crores nett in the country.

Talaash was released in 520 screens in 43 countries in overseas markets, just a day before it hit the screens in India. The suspense thriller has got very good response in the countries like USA, UK, UAE, GCC, Australia and New Zealand. It collected Rs 27.57 crore nett at the international Box Office. And it raked in Rs 9.18 crores on weekdays, taking its first week overseas total to Rs 36.75 crores nett ($ 6.75 million).
