Actor Divya Bharti died at nineteen: 27 years later, Her Fatal Fall From Her Balcony At The Age Of 19 Remains A Mystery which no one has solved.

Divya Bharti came from nowhere, set the silver screen ablaze with her sterling performance and spellbound-beauty and gone away to heavens equally fast. Divya Bharti’s life was cut tragically short after she died in 1993. Now, 27 years later, her sudden death still raises many unanswered questions. Speculations about her mysterious death still float among her fans and refuse to die down. 

Divya Bharti was considered one of the most popular, talented and vivacious actresses of her time. Divya Bharti’s short but eventful life was a stuff of legends, in some ways. Decades before nepotism would become a word that an outsider would cling to, she was a Bollywood outsider who made it big not only in Bollywood but in Telugu films too. She has no film lineage--her father was an insurance officer and mother, a housewife. Yet, what a staggering rise hers was.

Divya Bharti, born on February 25, 1974, in Mumbai to Omprakash Bharti and Meeta Bharti, attended high school in Juhu but dropped out after 9th grade when she started getting offers for films.

Career

In 1988, Bharti was discovered by filmmaker Nandu Tolani. Upon seeing her, Tolani insisted on signing her for one of his films. At that time, Bharti was in the ninth standard (in ninth grade). She was originally scheduled to make her screen debut in Gunahon Ka Devta in 1988, but her role was cancelled. Kirti Kumar noticed Bharti at a video library, and thus was eager to sign her for his project Radha Ka Sangam opposite Govinda, as he was searching for a new face. Weeks later, Kumar met with Dilip Shankar and managed to release Bharti from her contract. After taking dancing and acting lessons for months to prepare for her role, Bharti was eventually dropped and replaced by Juhi Chawla. Though the reasons remain unclear, it was speculated that Kumar's possessiveness over Bharti and her childish nature were the cause of her replacement.

It was at the age of 16 that Divya Bharti made her debut with the Telugu film itself Bobbili Raju (1990), opposite Venkatesh (Rana Daggubati’s uncle) was a massive hit and became a blockbuster and Divya Bharti became a huge star.  In fact, it is still recalled as one of the biggest Telugu hits of the ’90s. The teenaged actor would then go on to form winning combination with top Telugu actors Chiranjeevi, Mohan Babu and Nandamuri Balakrishna. Subsequently, she gave more hits like Rowdy Alludu and Assembly Rowdy in 1991.

Having established her toehold in Telugu films, it was time to try her luck in Hindi films. In fact, before her Telugu films came out, she had been considered for two prominent projects in Mumbai -- Radha Ka Sangam (with Govinda, a role which eventually went to Juhi Chawla) and Gunahon Ka Devta (1988 with Mithun Chakraborty) -- both got stalled. However, after her superstardom in Telugu films, there was no stopping Divya. Divya, who made her Bollywood debut in the film Dil Hi To Hai in 1992, got noticed in the industry with the Sunny Deol-starrer film Vishwatma the same year. Well, who could forget the very popular 'Saat Samundar Paar' song from the film? After that, she was roped in to work with big stars like Rishi Kapoor, Govinda, Sunil Shetty and many others.  From her debut film Vishwatma (1992) to Kshatriya (her last release during her lifetime), she took Hindi film industry by storm with her performances and worked in one successful film after another, most noteworthy being David Dhawan’s Govinda starrer Shola Aur Shabnum and Shah Rukh Khan and Rishi Kapoor starrer Deewana. She went on to act in over a dozen other films in her short career span and made a mark in the Hindi film industry.

Soon after, Divya Bharti was seen in 8 back-to-back films in the year 1992. Dil Ka Kya Kasoor flopped at the Box Office, but movies like Shola Aur Shabnam, Deewana, Balwaan and Jaan Se Pyaara became huge hits. Interestingly, Deewana was Shah Rukh Khan's debut and the duo's song - Aisi Deewangi was one of the most popular tracks of the year.

In March 1992, David Dhawan's Shola Aur Shabnam, starring Divya Bharti and Govinda was released. The film was a super hit and gave a big boost to Govinda's career.

Divya Bharti was rewarded as the Outstanding Face of the Year in 1992.

Divya Bharti starred opposite Jackie Shroff in two films - Dil Hi To Hai and Shatranj. While Dil Hi To Hai was directed by popular actor-comedian Asrani, it featured Jackie in a double role. Divya Bharti's second collaboration with Jackie was with Shatranj, which also starred Mithun Chakraborty and Juhu Chawla.

At the age of 16, she also met Sajid Nadiadwala. In the year 1990, when Govinda and Divya were shooting for the film 'Shola Aur Shabnam' at Filmcity, Sajid went on the sets to meet his friend Govinda. It is said that Govinda introduced both of them for the first time and after that Sajid started coming on the sets daily and he fell in love with Divya. Sajid himself once told in an interview that, "On 15 January 1992, Divya demanded to get married. The very next day she was very upset about her name being linked to another co-star.To answer such rumours she wanted to marry me. 

In the same year, On May 20, 1992, Divya-Sajid was married in the presence of hairdresser Sandhya and her husband and Kazi read her marriage in Sajid's Tulsi apartment in Versova. It is said that Divya accepted Islam and changed her name to 'Sana Nadiadwala'. In fact, Sajid himself had told in an interview, "We kept the matter of marriage hidden because Divya's career was at stake. If this thing went out, the producers would get scared. In contrast, I thought we had to make this thing known. Divya always wanted to tell everyone about her marriage. But I used to refuse her. Maybe I didn't want to do that." 

Looking at the films that she had either partially shot for and were later filled in my other actors or had signed on to work in, would give a sense of how excited the industry was with the prospect of this new and young star -- Anil Kapoor and Raveena Tandon’s Laadla (her role was reportedly later re-shot by Sridevi), she was replaced in Akshay Kumar’s Mohra, Ajay Devgn’s Vijaypath and Dilwale (all films went on to become hits). Divya Bharti had even shot a few portions of Mohra. She has projects lined up with actors Akshay Kumar (Parinaam), Salman Khan (Do Kadam), Rishi Kapoor (Kanyadaan), Sunny Deol (Bajrang) and Jackie Shroff (Chal Pe Chal). Does it get any bigger in Bollywood of the ’90s?

Divya Bharti’s rise to stardom and her untimely death April 5,1993 continues to intrigue fans, 27 years after her death. Was is an accident or was there more to it?

As per police files, Divya’s death remains an accident. The young actor was in an inebriated state when she walked on the ledge of her 5th floor home’s balcony in Mumbai, slipped and fell. She was reportedly still breathing when she was rushed to the hospital but died on arrival. She was declared dead on arrival. Divya died of fatal head injuries.

However, her fans refuse to believe that a star so promising and an actor so young could have gone away. Conspiracy theories abound -- a random search on the internet will throw up a number of web sites, claiming many things. Some claimed it was a murder while others believed it was a case of suicide. An old Hindustan Times report from 2011 said how initially rumours were afloat that it was the handiwork of the underworld. Roshmila Bhattacharya wrote: “I remember the day…April 6, 1993. I’d just stepped into the office when I was informed that Divya Bharti had been shot. ‘Who took the pictures? Gautam Rajadhyaksha or Rakesh Shrestha?’ I enquired. My colleague responded by saying he wasn’t taking photographs. ‘She’s been gunned down, I’m told the underworld is involved,’ he whispered. I dismissed it as just a rumour, but within minutes, the news was confirmed that Divya was dead.”

“At the hospital, we learnt that Divya had apparently slipped from the ledge on which she’d been perched. There were whispers of suicide, even murder, but eventually, her death was ruled as an accident and the file closed.”

The article recounts how the final moments before she breathed her last. “She was rushed to Cooper hospital, still breathing, holding tightly to the doctor’s shirt sleeve even as he assured her that she’d be fine. Then, just as they swept in through the hospital’s gates, she reportedly tugged on Dr Lulla’s sleeve one last time, before her grip slackened. She was declared dead on arrival,” it added.

"On 5th April 1993, she fell down from 5th story of Tulsi apartments, Versova (Mumbai). She signed a deal for a new apartment on the same day she died. She decided to meet her designer friend Neeta Lulla and her husband Dr. Shyam Lulla. At 10 p.m when all three of them were talking and drinking, suddenly Divya went to the kitchen and sat on a window which had no grills and fell down accidently on a concrete floor. After falling she was all in blood but still breathing. She was taken to the Cooper Hospital Mumbai in an emergency where she died." 

She returned from Chennai shooting a film and was to leave for Hyderabad for the second shoot, but she postponed the shoot for a new apartment deal. It is said that Divya had a leg injury on that day, about which she also told her director. 

Since Divya had embraced Islam and become Muslim and was still riding high in fame leaving behind many top actresses like Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. It may have disturbed certain quarters of the Hindu outfit, particularly Shiv Sena.

Divya had died after falling from the fifth floor from her apartment, Tulsi-II, in Mumbai, on April 5, 1993. The reason for her fall from the towering building couldn’t be established till date and the police closed the case in 1998, stating the actress died of unnatural causes.

There are a few social media users who also suspect the hand of Bal Thackery in the death of Divya Bharti because she had become Muslim. Such surmises and statements turn worth considering when the Divya’s death case history is tracked. The Police couldn’t find anything or perhaps was told to bury the case, is also a mystery.

When Divya died, three people were present with her at that time – her designer Neeta Lulla, Shyam Lulla and her maid Amrita. Shockingly, Amrita lost her life within 30 days of Divya’s death due to cardiac arrest, hence she couldn’t be questioned.

Amrita could have been an important eye-witness, who may have provided some inside information of the fateful night, but she died –or as some people say, she was silenced.

These developments raise doubts in the manner Divya died. Ironically, the death of Divya Bharti was largely portrayed as ‘suicide’ in the press, and people in general still consider it as a suicide. This was the impression created by certain quarters that the popular actress wilfully ended her life. But the series of events days before her death raise a lot of questions. The failure of police to reach conclusion and death of Divya’s maid who also died mysteriously are some of the major reasons that cast doubts on Shiv Sena.

If we study the whole case, the background, the fuelling Hindu-Muslim tensions, the clout of Shiv Sena, the Mumbai blasts, the popularity of Divya Bharti and her secret conversion to Islam – this won't be unwise to see Shiv Sena with a suspicious eye. However, since the radical outfit has sizable influence in Mumbai and all over India, no police or government can go after it.

Divya’s parents may definitely have some inside information about what caused their daughter’s tragic death, but they couldn’t divulge it for obvious reasons of security and threats. It is sad to Divya’s mother passed away in 2018 due to some illness. Going by several interviews given by Divya’s father, It seems that he has managed to overcome the shock, but his rage is palpable and it exists somewhere deep down.

What’s more, her family  'believed' it was an accident.

Speaking to India Today, Divya’s father Om Prakash Bharti had said, “There was no question of suicide or murder. Yes, she did drink a bit but how much can you drink in half an hour? And she was not depressed. She was the kind to give you depression!”

“It was an accident. She sat on the ledge, lost her balance and fell. Sadly, all flats had grills except hers. Cars would always be parked below but that night there was not a single one. She fell directly on the ground. I was shocked and lost my senses. But eventually, you have to face the truth.”

People believe that Divya's death is not an accident or suicide but a well-planned conspiracy, but till date, her death remains only an unsolved riddle.

Bollywood lost a shining star, but she is still adored by fans despite her passing after 27 years.

Divya is best remembered for like sprightly personality, her beauty, her acting versatility and vivacity. Tune in to any retro music channels of today and chances are you will still hear ‘Saat Samundar’ from Vishwatma playing.

Satyamev Jayate: Kidney specialist hits out at Aamir Khan

New Delhi: In the fourth episode of his widely-watched television show Satyamev Jayate, host, interlocutor and activist Aamir Khan spoke about healthcare services in India and the threat of rampant medical negligence. He called on 'victims' to share their trauma. One such victim of alleged medical malpractice was retired Army officer Major Pankaj Rai who lost his wife Seema to what he called a botched kidney transplantation operation.

Although Khan or his guest did not name anyone during the course of the show, but the doctor who was involved in the case, said his legal counsel and the hospital he worked for are preparing to send a legal notice to Khan and the show producers for tarnishing a reputation he had worked hard to build over 25 years of medical service. He accused Khan of lapses in research for the show and Rai of "falsely accusing him of medical negligence" that led to the death of his wife.

Nephrologist R Sreedhara, who worked at the Fortis Hospital in Bangalore, said during a telephone interview to IBNLive that ever since the episode of Satyamev Jayate was aired he has been inundated with calls. He was the consulting physician of Seema Rai when she first came to him in June, 2008 with kidney problems. He said his "harassment" started after her operation in May, 2010 when she went into a septic shock and died.

Dr. Sreedhara has been fighting this battle in several medical bodies of arbitration for the past two years and said he has lost his mental peace due to "the falsehood propagated by Rai against him, his colleague and his hospital" for a high-risk surgery that went wrong due to added complications.

Rai alleged on the show that the doctors whisked his wife off to surgery without his consent and transplanted the pancreas of a cadaver donor, along with a kidney, that was not only an unnecessary medical procedure but one that risked his wife's life as well. But Dr Sreedhara said he had proof to show that Rai had suppressed much of the truth and even lied during the show and that it was him who was being hounded.

"I have posted feedback on the website of Satyamev Jayate, I have sent an email to Aamir khan, I have also posted an open letter to Aamir Khan. I don't know if Aamir Khan has seen my reply or not, but I have attempted to send it to him. Meanwhile I have discussed with attorneys and the hospital and we are in the process of sending a legal notice to the show producers and Aamir Khan because he made a very serious allegation without bothering to do any research. The Karnataka Medical Council has clearly said there was absolutely no medical negligence involved and there was no monetary gain or personal gain to the doctors. How can Aamir Khan say there was medical negligence? Nobody has gotten back to me," Dr Sreedhara said.

Here's Sreedhara's account of the ill-fated surgery

"I am a Nephrologist. I am certified by an American board in internal medicine and nephrology. I worked and practiced in America for nearly 16 years and I came back to India in 2003. In the entire 16 years in America not a single patient had any complaint against me, regarding any negligence. My mental peace in the last two years has been destroyed due to constant harassment, for no fault of my mine. I become emotional when I talk about this. It's very very painful," Dr Sreedhara said.

""We have sent the medical case history to all doctors, to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, to Madras, to Bombay, to America. All of them have said that everything was done properly. Some patients die in surgery due to unforeseen complications like what happened in our case. It is not because we tried to kill her, I mean what do we gain by killing a person?

"I work at the Fortis hospital in Bangalore. The patient, the wife of Mr Pankaj Rai, her name is Seema Rai, came to see me first about June 2008. She was suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure for more than 18-19 years at that time and she had kidney disease. We always discuss about future treatment like dialysis and transplantation. (In this also) we had discussed at length with the patient and her family," he said.

"About a year later, in April 2009, she registered for cadaver kidney transplantation with a government body called Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation. Subsequently, her kidney function worsened gradually and in November 2009 we started her on dialysis.

"After starting dialysis, she was doing well. On May 1, 2010, I got a call from the ZCCT, the agency that allocates cadaver kidney organs, that a potential cadaver had been identified and Mrs Rai was one of the potential recipients. On Saturday night she got admitted to Fortis hospital along with her husband and daughter. This was 8:45 at night on Saturday. I was out of town but when I got the call from ZCCT I came back to Bangalore and evaluated her. At that time the patient was also seen by the transplant surgeon. We discussed again the cadaver transplantation procedure. The risks and the benefits were explained to the patient over a period of two years. She was a teacher at an international school, an intelligent person, and she understood," he said.

"The patient's husband gave us the consent"

"At that time the surgeon also explained to the patient that in cadaver transplant situation the simultaneous transplantation of kidney as well as pancreas was better in the long term, also the immediate post operative risks are higher in surgery. The patient and her family had a lot of questions which answered. They wanted to speak with their relative in New York so the doctors came out of the room. The patient's husband said 'Dr Saab we will proceed with simultaneous kidney and pancreas surgery.' This was around 1030 - 1045 in the night on Saturday. At that time the surgeon was present, the nurses were present. Mr Rai directly told me in person that 'we will proceed with simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplantation.' Even at that time I told the husband that 'Mr Rai your wife had registered only for kidney transplantation in the past one year, pancreas was only suggested to you today. Till the patient is taken to the operating room, you can change your decision and let us know. Kidney transplantation will be done and there are no additional charges for pancreas," Dr Sreedhara said.

What the Rais had to say on the show

"It's not as if people can't live with dialysis. They called us from the hospital to tell us that a donor was available. We had her admitted to the hospital on the doctors' advice. We were amazed that a day prior to surgery the doctors said we could transplant her pancreas as well. Have you heard of such a thing? They kept saying there's no risk. But Seema said she wasn't prepared for this," Rai told Khan during the May 27 episode of Satyamev Jayate. "The doctors said we could wait till the morning to get a cardiologist to take a look at her," he said.

Rai's daughter Abha said at around 5 AM a nurse came in and claimed she had to take her mother for a routine check up and asked her to sign a form. They insisted that the hospital authorities had not taken their permission prior to the surgery.

Post-operation complications

Rai said he was asked to arrange for blood as the doctors said his wife could die on the operating table. He said the doctors estimated that the blood loss would be 390 ml. According to Rai, the doctors transplanted 119 units or approximately 60 litres of blood during the three post-operative days.

What Dr Sreedhara had to say

According to Dr Sreedhara, in the three days post the operation, the patient developed a severe bleeding condition called Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation or DIC. "In DIC we give blood as well as blood products like plasma. We gave the patient 33 units of blood which roughly amounts to 13 litres of blood. Mr Rai is promoting this falsehood that platelet is also same as blood, 1 unit of platelet is about 50 ml not 500 ml as he has calculated so it's like comparing apples with oranges."

What went wrong?

Dr Sreedhara said that on the night of operation "the patient was stable throughout the night and she was evaluated by myself and transplant surgeon and the anaesthesia team for a preoperative evaluation she was stable and found fit for surgery. The operation started and the kidney transplantation was done first. I went to the OT just to see how she was doing. She was fine and the kidney, as soon as it was transplanted, started making urine. I came out of the OT and assured Mr Rai that the kidney transplantation was over and she was doing well and we were going ahead with the pancreas transplantation. He thanked me."

This contradicts with Rai's statement that he was not aware of the surgery being done on his wife and had not given consent for it.

"By post operative day three she was awake and responsive and we were about to remove the ventilator. Unfortunately on the evening of day three she developed high fever and she went into septic shock on the fourth day. Patients with diabetes or kidney failure have a high risk of infection, plus when we give all these powerful immuno-suppressive medicines, the risk of infections increase further. Plus she had received a lot of blood and blood products because of bleeding," he said.

"During the entire hospitalization Mr Rai was very thankful and in fact he told me several times, 'Dr Saab how much you are struggling to save my wife, how can I thank you?' After the patient passed away I called them several times to express my condolence. I also told the emergency room doctors to evaluate his daughter and give her some medication to calm her down. Next day again morning he called me and said 'Dr Saab please help us to get the body', I called the hospital administration and told them please resolve their bills immediately. After that I never heard from him. Before the surgery he used to be so friendly."

The legal battle

On May 30, 2010, Rai lodged a police complaint alleging murder. About a week after this he filed a medical negligence complaint at the Karnataka Medical Council. Subsequently he complained to the Health Department, the Human Rights Commission, the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and held press conferences.

"On Satyamev Jayate, Rai said he never gave consent. But when he lodged a complaint with the police and the Karnataka Medical Council, two to three weeks after the death of the patient, he never mentioned the issue of informed consent. If somebody has operated on a patient without consent, won't that be your first complaint? It's only in afterthought that he's saying that they didn't give informed consent. The Karnataka Medical Association did a very thorough investigation over one year and conducted a lot of hearings," he said.

According to Sreedhara, the KMC completed their enquiry within one year and they came to the unanimous decision in June 2011 that there was no medical negligence on the part of the doctors. Rai appealed against the decision to the Medical Council of India and that appeal is still ongoing. He also complained to the Lokayukta against the Health Department.

Rai's complaint that the hospital did not have the facilities for multi-organ transplant was entirely baseless, Dr Sreedhara said.

An official spokesperson for the Satyamev Jayate team refused to comment on the matter.

Dr Sreedharan has accused Khan's team of not doing their homework by getting both sides of the story, as a result of which his integrity is under question. And Rai has lost his wife to what he termed gross negligence. The case is still being examined, which makes conclusions premature.

Audience reacts to Sakshi-Ram intimacy

Intimacy isn’t explicit on TV in India because channels cater to family audiences. Usually, all you see is hugging, caressing and sighing, shots of various portions of the actors’ anatomy, romantic songs in the background, flying hair, candle flames wavering and flowers strewn about the set.

Viewers of this popular television soap were in for a big surprise as the lead actors Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanvar indulged in a liplock which was part of good 17 minutes long love-making scene. The episode aired last night at 10.30 pm on Sony.

The channel was promoting   episode for a while but an actual lip to lip wasn't really expected. People watching the episode with families were a bit scandalised.

Sakshi did a decent job but it was Ram who took the cake. His expressions of hesitation, desire and love came out quite naturally.

Reactions to the love-making episode have been as intense as the scene itself.   Bangalore-based Sangita Kini, 29, says, “It was too much for a TV serial that you watch with family and kids. Ekta is trying to shoot her shows like films for a rise in TRPs. This episode needs to be condemned.”  Pooja Shenoy, from 24, New Delhi, feels the same. “I wasn’t comfortable watching the episode with my family,” she says, backed by Aditya Raj, 45, from Jaipur. “For TV, the scene was long drawn out and too much,” he says. “Otherwise, the romance was just right.” 

Bade Acche Lagte Hain, with television rating of 3.25% (as reported by Screen), is a story of two strangers from different backgrounds getting married and eventually falling in love. Kapoor plays business honcho Ram in his 40s while Tanwar portrays Priya, a teacher in her 30s. In the last episode, Ram confesses his love to Priya and consummates his marriage. And how!

The bedroom scene was enacted with, In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein from Jodhaa Akbar playing in the backdrop. In the film too, Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan consummated their marriage in this song sequence. It's so obviously contrived.
