MUMBAI 12 July, 2012: Legendary wrestler and actor Dara Singh passed away at his Mumbai home early on Thursday. He was 83.
Dara Singh, who was admitted to Kokilaben Hospital last week after a cardiac arrest, was taken back to his home on Wednesday night after his condition failed to improve despite continuous medical effort. Doctors, on Wednesday, had said that chances of Dara Singh's recovery were poor.
Doctors said that Dara Singh had suffered significant brain damage after the cardiac arrest.
He had appeared in films like "Watan Se Door", "Daada", "Rustom-E-Baghdad", "Sher Dil", "Sikandar E Azam", "Raaka", "Mera Naam Joker" and "Dharam Karam". He was last seen in the 2007 release "Jab We Met".
World champion wrestler Dara Singh, who joined the film industry in 1960s, was last seen in 2007 movie 'Jab We Met' alongside Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor.
‘Mahabali’ Dara Singh was the undisputed champion of champions in the wrestling ring and has won many times including the world championship in 1968.
He took to acting in 1962 and is best remembered for his portrayal of Hanuman in popular TV series ‘Ramayan’.
Dara Singh, who was a Rajya Sabha member from August 2003 to 2009, was best remembered for his iconic role as 'Hanuman' in the epic TV serial 'Ramayan'.
He had also directed films.
Dara Singh was also known for his generous kind nature. Affable to the extreme, he made friends easily and never misused his power even in his heydays.
He was a gentleman. India has a lost a jewel today.

Mumbai, 11 July 2012 - Dara Singh, a wrestler-turned-actor, is still in critical condition after suffering from a severe cardiac arrest on Saturday.
Several Bollywood celebrities including director and choreographer Farah Khan, actors Om Puri, Raza Murad and Dharmendra paid a visit to the hospital to meet Singh's family.
"I didn't want to see him lying down in a stateless. I want to remember Dara uncle as a robust fighter, healthy and strong. So, I didn't go inside to see him but I met his family and came back," Farah Khan told reporters outside the hospital.
Dharmendra, who met the ailing Singh on Wednesday, asked everyone to pray for his health and a quick recovery.
"He is my darling brother ...please pray for him. Doctors are trying their best, but let's all pray for him," Dharmendra told the media.
Tina Ambani, actress and Chairperson of the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital, also met Singh's family on Monday, and assured Vindu that the doctors are trying their best to help Singh battle with his condition.
Meanwhile, some media channels reported that the ailing actor passed away on Monday. News of his alleged death quickly hit the social media, with people posting condolence messages on Twitter and Facebook.
Shocked by the false report of his father's death, Vindu thrashed the rumor and said, "There is slight improvement in his condition and please it's a request till the time he is alive please don't kill him and pray for him. We can see that he is fighting from inside."
Dr Ram Narain, COO of the hospital, also refuted the rumor that Singh is dead.
"Dara Singh is not dead. These are all rumors. He is on ventilator and needs high dosage of oxygen. His kidneys are not working," Narain told an entertainment website.
"Dara's entire family is here. Vindu has accepted the fact that his father is 84. He knows his condition and has understood the situation. We just hope that he gets better with passing time," he added.

हिंदी फिल्मों का सुनहरा सफर आज सौवें साल में प्रवेश कर रहा है। अगर इस एक सदी में आधी सदी पंजाब के नाम लिख दें तो कुछ गलत न होगा। क्या अभिनय और क्या गीत-संगीत, या फिर निर्माण-निर्देशन, पंजाब ने हिंदी सिनेमा की इन सभी विधाओं में जितनी नामचीन हस्तियां दी हैं, उतनी शायद ही किसी और प्रांत ने। कितने ही प्रख्यात पंजाबी फिल्म निर्माता, निर्देशक, गीतकार, संगीतकार, अभिनेता आदि पंजाब से निकल कर हिंदी सिनेमा के आकाश पर चमके। प्रख्यात फिल्म निर्माता-निर्देशक यश जौहर का जन्म अमृतसर में हुआ था। अपनी दर्द भरी आवाज से 50-60 के दशक में फिल्मों को हिट कराने वाले मुकेश लुधियाना में पैदा हुए थे जबकि अपनी मखमली आवाज में हजारों सदाबहार गीतों के जरिए आज भी संगीत प्रेमियों में जिंदा मुहम्मद रफी साहिब अमृतसर में। अभिनेताओं की बात करें तो धर्म देव पिशौरीमल आनंद गुरदासपुर में जन्मे जिन्होंने देव आनंद के नाम से गाइड, ज्वेल थीफ, हम दोनों, गैंबलर व तीन देवियां सरीखी फिल्मों से अपना जादू बरकरार रखा। अनेक कामयाब फिल्मों के जरिए करीब आधी सदी से फिल्म जगत पर जगमगा रहे धर्मेद्र लुधियाना में जन्मे थे, जबकि राजेश खन्ना अमृतसर में। हिंदी फिल्मों का सफर 1913 से शुरू हुआ जब भारत-पाक का विभाजन नहीं हुआ था और पंजाब का भी बंटवारा नहीं हुआ था। उस समय के पंजाब की चर्चा करें तो संगीतकार रोशन गुजरांवाला, साहिर लुधियानवी के नाम से मशहूर गीतकार-शायर अब्दुल हई लुधियाना, ओपी नैय्यर लाहौर, नक्श लायलपुरी फैसलाबाद, सुरैया गुजरांवाला, यश चोपड़ा लाहौर, जुबली कुमार के नाम से विख्यात रहे राजेंद्र कुमार स्यालकोट और गुलजार के नाम से लिखने वाले लेखक, निर्माता-निर्देशक संपूर्ण सिंह कालरा जेहलम जिले में पैदा हुए थे। इस सबके बीच यदि कपूर परिवार की चर्चा न हो तो फिल्मों का स्वर्णिम अध्याय अधूरा है। पृथ्वी राज कपूर संयुक्त पंजाब के लायलपुर में पैदा हुए थे। और उसके बाद उनके परिवार से चौथी पीढ़ी अब परिवार की परंपरा को आगे बढ़ा रही है। यह वे नाम हैं जिन्होंने बरसों हिंदी सिनेमा पर अपने-अपने काम के जरिए राज किया। पंजाब का योगदान केवल इन जगमगाते सितारों तक ही नहीं है बल्कि हिंदी फिल्मों में मुंडा, कुड़ी, मक्खणा, गड्डी व मौजां आदि शब्दों की भरमार रही है जो विशुद्ध पंजाबी शब्द हैं। इतना ही नहीं अनेक पंजाबी गीतों ने हिंदी फिल्मों को यादगार व हिट बनाया है। ले दे सैंया ओढ़नी मौजां ही मौजां, नगाड़ा-नगाड़ा, मां दा लाडला बिगड़ गया, नी मैं समझ गई खाली दिल नइयों जान वी ए मंगदा, मस्त कलंदर लंबी जुदाई, जी करदा.तैनूं जफ्फियां पावां जी करदा ऐवें दुनिया देवे दुहाई और नी मैं यार मनाणा नी आदि सैकड़ों ऐसे गीत हैं जिन्होंने हिंदी सिनेमा में अपनी अहमियत बनाई।
नई दिल्ली। कभी देश के कोने कोने में हिन्दी के विस्तार का श्रेय हिन्दी फिल्मों को दिया जाता था लेकिन बदलते वक्त में नए अंग्रेजी पसंद करने वाले अभिनेता-अभिनेत्रियों के लिए अब हिन्दी फिल्मों में संवाद रोमन में लिखे जाने लगे ताकि वे आसानी से उसे पढ सकें। इसके अलावा क्रेडिट लाइन और प्रचार सामग्री तो रोमन में ही प्रदर्शित की जाती है।
मशहूर निर्माता निर्देशक बासु भट्टाचार्य ने कहा था, हिन्दी का सौभाग्य है कि वह देश के कोने कोने में बोली जाती है लेकिन यह दुर्भाग्य है कि भारत के किसी भूभाग में वह अपनी आत्मीयता स्थापित नहीं कर पाई है। जिन प्रदेशों में प्रादेशिक भाषाएं फल फूल रही है, उन क्षेत्रों में किसी को हिन्दी की ओर नजार उठाकर देखने की भी फुरसत नहीं है। ऐसी स्थिति में उसे अपने बल पर खड़ा होना होगा।
त्रिलोक जैतली ने गोदान के निर्माता निर्देशक के रूप में जिस प्रकार आर्थिक नुकसान का ख्याल किए बिना प्रेमचंद की आत्मा को सामने रखा, वह आज भी आदर्श है। गोदान के बाद ही साहित्यिक कृतियों पर आधारित फिल्मों का मार्ग प्रशस्त हुआ। इसी श्रृंखला में शतरंज के खिलाड़ी भी ऐसी ही एक फिल्म थी।
फणीश्वरनाथ रेणु की बहुचर्चित कहानी मारे गए गुलफाम पर आधारित फिल्म तीसरी कसम हिन्दी सिनेमा में कथानक और अभिव्यक्ति का सशक्त उदाहरण है। ऐसी फिल्मों में बदनाम बस्ती, अषाढ़ का दिन, सूरज का सातवां घोड़ा, एक था चंदर.एक थी सुधा, सत्ताइस डाउन, रजनीगंधा, सारा आकाश भी शामिल है।
फिल्म समीक्षक हसनैन साजिद रिजवी ने कहा कि फिल्म जगत में एक वर्ग का आज भी दावा है कि हिन्दी फिल्मों ने हिन्दी की जो सेवा की, उसके प्रचार प्रसार में जो योगदान दिया, उसे नजरंदाज करना मुमकिन नहीं। देश के कोने कोने में आज हिन्दी का जो विस्तार दिखाई दे रहा है, उसके पीछे हमारी फिल्में ही हैं।
हसनैन ने कहा कि दूसरा पक्ष यह पूछ बैठता है कि हिन्दी भाषा के इतने दर्शकअगर नहीं मिलते तब क्या हिन्दी में इतनी फिल्मों को निर्माण होता। हिन्दी तब से बोली जाती हैं जब फिल्मों का प्रादुर्भाव नहीं हुआ था। भाषा के साथ फिल्मों का कोई खास संबंध नहीं होता है, आज भी लोग मगन होकर सत्यजित राय और मृणाल सेन की फिल्में देखते हैं। लेकिन इन फिल्मों को देखने से कोई बंगला भाषा में प्रवीण नहीं हो जाता है।
उन्होंने ने कहा कि आज काफी संख्या में ऐसे अभिनेता-अभिनेत्रियां हैं जो दूसरे मुल्कों और परिवेश से आकर बॉलीवुड में काम कर रही हैं। कट्रीना कैफ, काल्की कोचलिन, जैकलिन फनाडिस, सन्नी लियोन, लिजा रे, जरीन खान, जिया खान, फ्रीडा पिंटो आदि दूसरे देश से आई हैं लेकिन काफी हिन्दी फिल्मों में काम कर रही है। हिन्दी फिल्मों की स्थिति का अंदाजा इसी से लगाया जा सकता है।
उन्होंने कहा कि ऐसे कलाकारों के लिए हिन्दी फिल्मों में प्रयोग में आने वाले संवाद अब रोमन में लिखे जाते हैं। क्रेडिट टाइटल और प्रचार सामग्री भी अंग्रेजी में होती है। देवदास, बन्दिनी, सुजाता और परख जैसी फिल्में उस समय बाक्स आफिस पर उतनी सफल नहीं रहने के बावजूद फिल्मों के भारतीय इतिहास के नए युग की प्रवर्तक मानी जाती हैं।
आज लोगों को धरती के लाल और नीचा नगर जैसी फिल्मों का इंतजार है जिसके माध्यम से दर्शकों को खुली हवा का स्पर्श मिले और अपनी माटी की सोंधी सुगन्ध, मुल्क की समस्याओं एवं विभीषिकाओं का आभास हो।
हिन्दी सिनेमा आज से ठीक 99 साल पहले मूक फिल्मों के साथ शुरू हुई थी और आज उसका यह सफर थ्री डी फिल्मों तक जा पहुंचा है. इस सौ सालों में हिन्दी सिनेमा इंडस्ट्री ने कई उतार-चढ़ाव देखे हैं, कई को बनता तो कई को बिगड़ता हुआ देखा है. हिन्दी सिनेमा का सफर किसी भी लिहाज से आसान नहीं कहा जा सकता. यह सफर बहुत ही परेशानियों से भरा रहा है. लेकिन तमाम परेशानियों को मिटाकर हिन्दी सिनेमा ने हमेशा आगे की तरफ ही कदम बढ़ाए हैं. हां, यह जरूर है कि ज्यादा आगे जाने के चक्कर में हिन्दी सिनेमा सही और गलत के बीच की दीवार को भी कई बार लांघता हुआ देखा गया. हालांकि सौ साल पूरे होने की खुशी में चलिए सभी गम भुलाकर याद करें हिन्दी सिनेमा के पिछले 99 सालों के सफर को. फिर लौट आए हैं बैडमैन

99 साल पहले दादा साहब फालके ने 1913 में राजा हरिश्चंद्र की फिल्म बनाई थी, एक ऐसा राजा जो कभी झूठ नहीं बोलता था, जरूरत पड़ने पर भी झूठ का सहारा नहीं लेता था. यह एक मूक फिल्म थी. वर्तमान में सैंकड़ों फिल्में विभिन्न भाषाओं में बन चुकी हैं. हम हिंदी सिनेमा की सदी की ओर कदम रख चुके हैं और 21 अप्रैल, 2013 में हिंदी सिनेमा अपने 100 वर्ष पूरे कर लेगा.
सफर बिन बोलती फिल्मों से लेकर रंगीन सिनेमा तक का
राजा हरिश्चंद्र मई 1913 में तैयार हुई थी. फिल्म बहुत जल्दी भारत में लोकप्रिय हो गई और 1930 तक लगभग 200 फिल्में भारत में बन रही थीं. दादा साहब फालके द्वारा बनाई गई यह फिल्म 1914 में लंदन में दिखाई गई. पहली बोलती फिल्म थी अरदेशिर ईरानी द्वारा बनाई गई आलम आरा. इस फिल्म को दर्शकों की खूब प्रशंसा मिली और इसके बाद सभी बोलती फिल्में बनीं. इसके बाद देश विभाजन जैसी ऐतिहासिक घटनाएं हुर्ई. उस समय बनीं हिंदी फिल्मों पर इसका प्रभाव छाया रहा.
फिल्मों का विषय
1950 से हिंदी फिल्में श्वेत-श्याम से रंगीन हो गईं. उस दौर में फिल्मों का विषय प्रेम होता था और गाने फिल्म का महत्वपूर्ण अंग बन गए थे. इस तरह 1960-70 के दशक में फिल्मों में हिंसाका प्रभाव रहा. 1980-90 के दशक में दोबारा प्रेम पर आधारित फिल्में दर्शकों के बीच लोकप्रिय हुर्ईं. वर्ष 1990 के बाद बनीं फिल्में भारत ही नहीं बल्कि विदेशों में भी चर्चा में रहीं. विदेशों में हिंदी फिल्मों के चर्चा में रहने का मुख्य कारण प्रवासी भारतीय थे और फिल्मों में भी प्रवासी भारतीयों को दिखाया जाता था. आज के समय में फिल्मों का विषय बेहद फैल चुका है. समाज के हर पहलू पर आपको सिनेमा जगत में फिल्में देखने को मिलेंगी. हां आज वास्तविकता और मनोरंजन के नाम पर फूहड़पन बेचने का एक नया कारोबार जरूर शुरू हुआ है जिसका सपना शायद दादा साहब फाल्के ने नहीं देखा था.
दो शब्द सिनेमा के पितामह के नाम
दादा साहब फाल्के को भारतीय सिनेमा का पितामह कहा जाता है. दादा साहब फाल्के सर जेजे स्कूल ऑर्फ आर्ट्स के प्रशिक्षित सृजनशील कलाकार थे. वह मंच के अनुभवी अभिनेता थे और शौकिया जादूगर. वह प्रिटिंग के कारोबार में थे. 1910 में उनके एक साझेदार ने उनसे अपना आर्थिक सहयोग वापस ले लिया. कारोबार में हुई हानि से उनका स्वभाव चिड़चिड़ा हो गया. उन्होंने क्रिसमस के अवसर पर ईसामसीह पर बनीं एक फिल्म देखी. फिल्म देखने के दौरान ही उन्होंने निर्णय किया कि उन्हें एक फिल्मकार बनना है. उसके बाद से उन्होंने फिल्मों पर अध्ययन और विश्लेषण करना शुरू कर दिया. फिल्मकार बनने के इसी जुनून को साथ लिए वह 1912 में फिल्म प्रोडक्शन में क्रैश कोर्स करने के लिए इंग्लैंड चले गए और हेपवर्थ के अधीन काम करना सीखा और इसके बाद उन्होंने अपने ज्ञान से भारत को सिनेमामय बना दिया.
Mumbai, July 10 (IANS) Actor Dharmendra, who visited hospitalised wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh whose condition is very critical, asked people to pray for his recovery.
"He is my darling brother. Let's pray for him. Doctors are trying their best. Please pray for him," Dharmendra told reporters after his visit.
Dara Singh, who was hospitalised at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital Saturday, continues to be very critical and is now undergoing dialysis, a doctor had said Monday.
"He is still very critical. His condition has not deteriorated and he is holding up, but he requires a high dose of medication.The problem he came up with during hospitalization has now affected hiskidneys. His kidneys are not functioning the way they should, so we have to put him on dialysis," hospital COO Ram Narain told IANS.
Dara Singh, who won the title of Rustam-e-Hind for his wrestling prowess, entered the film world in the 1960s.
He appeared in various films like "Watan Se Door", "Rustom-e-Baghdad", "Sher Dil", "Sikandare- Azam", "Ham Sab Ustaad Hai", "Raaka", "Mera Naam Joker" and "Dharam Karam". He was last seen in a 2007 release "Jab We Met".
He has also done TV serials and is best known for his portrayal of Hanuman in various film and TV adaptions of the Ramayan.
The tiny hamlet of Dharmuchak near Amritsar — that had shot to fame when a young Sikh boy, Dara Singh, went from here in 1940 and became a champion wrestler and national icon of masculinity — has set a big date with Lord Hanuman.
Since Sunday, With wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh in a critical condition in a Mumbai hospital after a cardiac arrest, residents of his native village Dharmoochak near Amritsar have been praying fervently for his early recovery.
A report from Mumbai said on Monday that the actor continued to be in a very critical condition. Doctors treating him said he was put on a ventilator and was undergoing dialysis since his kidneys too had stopped functioning.
The villagers have been keeping an eye on news regarding his health and want him to recover soon. A few villagers and his relatives residing in the village also went to a temple on Monday to hold prayers.
Talking to reporters, Baljit Singh, a nephew of Dara Singh, said, "The entire village loves Dara Singh. We want him to recover soon and visit his village. He has always inspired the youth to adopt wrestling and be in good health. And now, when he himself is not keeping good health, we are feeling bad."
Besides his roles in various films, people remember him for essaying the role of Hanuman in Ramanand Sagar's tele-serial 'Ramayan', he added.
Baljit said he would soon leave for Mumbai to see his uncle.
Darbara Singh, another resident of the village, said, "I have fond memories of time we spent together during childhood. He not only inspired me to take up wrestling, but also got me roles in a couple of films. It is hard to believe that someone who has remained so fit all his life is facing health problems. I wish him a speedy recovery and a long healthy life."
One of Dara Singh's friend Jagir Singh, said: "We used to take animals for grazing and plough fields together. Dara Singh was very docile in nature. He would meet all of his friend whenever he would come to his village." Jagir Singh, said he had spent a lot of time with Dara Singh and the entire village was praying for his health.
Youngsters Karaj and Sukhraj were effusive in their praise of the former wrestler, saying he had made the village proud by achieving so much. They said they hoped he would recover soon and pay a visit to his ancestral village.
They said they had not watched many of his films, but they loved his outstanding performance as god Hanuman in 'Ramayan'.
Sukhraj Singh, a local resident, who along with his family members, paid obeisance at Lord Hanuman temple for the well being of Dara Singh. "Dara Singh had given them funds for the construction of stadium in village. He is our Hanuman and he will live forever," Sukhraj said.

Eighty-three-year-0ld Singh, who had become a household name in the country both as a wrestler and an actor essaying action and mythological roles in the 1960s and 1970s, was rushed to the Kokilaben Hospital on Saturday after he suffered a cardio- respiratory arrest.
“He had no pulse and was not breathing. We resuscitated him and put him on a ventilator. He is in Intensive Care Unit. We are hoping that his condition would stablise soon. As of now, his condition is not stable,” Dr Naraian said.
Meanwhile, yesteryear super star Rajesh Khanna, who had been undergoing treatment at the Lilavati Hospital for a fortnight, has been discharged from the hospital.
“Khanna is back home. He was discharged yesterday (Saturday). He is absolutely fine now,” his actress-wife Dimple Kapadia said.
Kaka, as Rajesh Khanna is known in Bollywood, had been rushed by his family members to the Lilavati Hospital on June 23 after he complained of acute pain in the stomach. Dimple was on his side ever since then.
Shatrughan Sinha recovering
Meanwhile, actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha continued to recuperate from breathlessness at the same hospital. He was admitted on last Monday for respiratory problems. “He gets breathless occasionally and we have to adjust his medications accordingly. We will keep him under observation. It could take a couple of days,” said Dr Narain.
Sinha was admitted on last Monday.
His family members said it was a severe allergic respiratory reaction to painting going on at home.
Rajesh Khanna discharged
Actor Rajesh Khanna was discharged from Lilavati Hospital at around 1:30am on Sunday.
The 69-year-old was taken to the hospital on June 23, after he complained of exhaustion and weakness.
According to doctors at the hospital, Khanna was admitted in a private room for better medical monitoring. “He underwent a battery of investigations and doctors were continuously monitoring his health,” said a senior official from the hospital.

Reader Chris brought the sad lack of reviews on the internet of this film to my attention recently, and I am surprised. This is a really fun film, and though Shammi is admittedly towards the end of his career as a hero, he is still the Shammi who made hearts go pitter-patter. The songs are classic Shanker-Jaikishan-Rafi-Shammi, with the dance-off between Helen and Vijayanthimala probably its most well-known feature. But there’s so much more to it than that! Shammi is less exuberant than the Yahoo Shammi of early in the decade, which gives his performance a more subdued realism. He plays Prince Shamsher Singh, the jaded, bored, arrogant son of the Maharajah of Ramnagar (Ulhas); the film is about how wealth and privilege do not guarantee happiness, not by a long shot. This theme—and the setting, at the twilight of the Princely States—may be be trite, but they are no less valid; and the screenplay and story are penned by none other than Abrar Alvi. And the supporting cast…let’s just say it is a gift that keeps on giving.
Shamsher is a very unhappy man who finds refuge in alcohol and can only sleep with the aid of tranquilizers liberally supplied by his factotums, both of whom appear to be named Zanowar (Rashid Khan and Sunder) (as is usual with this genre, everybody’s last name is Singh); nothing holds his interest or attention for very long.
How I love Bejewelled Shammi. I love bejewelled anything, really, but especially Shammi. *Sigh*
All this angst comes to a head one day when, after a highly respected and egalitarian holy man (Nayampalli) refuses to put the drunken Prince ahead of the people waiting in line, he has the Swami brought to him and demands an apology. The Swami’s cool refusal infuriates Shamsher and he whips the poor man brutally, working himself into a tantrum of monstrous proportions. When he collapses exhausted and sobbing with frustration and misery, the Swami says one of the wisest things I’ve heard lately to him.
The holy man, still calm after the beating he has received, soothes the weeping Shamsher. Amazed by his compassion and his strength, Shamsher asks how he can achieve the same strength of spirit. The Swami tells him to leave the palace with its trappings of wealth and to go live anonymously, like an ordinary man, for six months.
As the sole heir, Shamsher knows that his father will never stop looking for him—unless he fakes his own death, of course. He drives for a solid day and night, finally coming to an exhausted stop in the environs of another royal state, Jamnapur.
He pushes his jeep into the river and sets off to become a mamuli aadmi as instructed. It does not proceed smoothly, however. A traveling insurance salesman named Vilayatiram (Rajendrenath) gives him a lift on the condition that he will buy life insurance.
They soon come across a gaggle of what look like village girls, but are actually the local Maharajah’s daughter Amrita (Vyjayanthimala) and her friends. They had watched as Shamsher’s jeep crashed onto their boat on the river’s edge, taking their belongings with it.
They too beg a lift from Vilayatiram, and Amrita sits down squarely on the now fast-asleep Shamsher. He wakes up and they stare at each other with a spark of instant attraction. MELT!

Vilayatiram and Shamsher drop the girls off in the village still thinking that they are locals, and Amrita parts from Shamsher with the teasing proclamation that she’s going home to her husband. I think most of you will understand how thrilled I am with the next set of developments. Vilayatiram’s rusty jalopy breaks down and Shamsher goes into the forest for some water. Dacoits attack each of them; Vilayatiram escapes when his car backfires at the perfect moment, but Shamsher is not so lucky. OR IS HE? I guess it all depends on one’s point of view. Shamsher is saved from the belligerent machinations of Shyam Kumar by the young and dashing Sajjan Singh (Sudhir). Sajjan Singh has discovered that his ailing mother is blind and he wants a way out of the gang so that he can go live with her and help out. He figures that by saving Shamsher’s life he has a better shot at getting the Maharajah of Jamnapur to forgive him his previous sins. Sadly, as they make their escape they run smack into Shyam Kumar, who fatally shoots Sajjan Singh just as Vilayatiram shows up with the police. I make a Nahiiin! Face. Not Sudhir! It does no good and Sajjan Singh dies after extracting a promise from Shamsher. Shammi + Sudhir = Almost Too Much For Memsaab To Handle. Sajjan’s conveniently blind Maa Shanti (Leela Chitnis) is expiring on her bed: not from any disease, as the doctor informs her neighbors (who take pains to mention that they’ve never met Sajjan), but from pining for her son. She is thrilled when Shamsher presents himself at her door, and instantly gets better, assuming him to be her long-lost Sajjan. Being told that his showing up has saved her life, Shamsher hesitates and then goes along with her misconception. In Ramnagar, his father is told of his demise. His grief is centered around his loss of an heir rather than the loss of a beloved son, but I guess given Shamsher’s former nature I can’t blame him (much). In Jamnapur, Shamsher explains away his eurocentric characteristics by saying that he had become a midshipman after leaving home, and has traveled around the world. Neighbor Kamla (Leela Mishra) is not having it. Her husband (Durrani) gets Shamsher a job at the Maharajah’s stables mucking out the horses (and singing, “Sansaar Suhana Lagta Hai”). He literally runs into the haughty Princess Amrita again and the Shammi-stalking-as-love begins. With his polish, charm, and polo skills, he ingratiates himself quickly with her father (DK Sapru) who makes Shamsher his ADC. Maa is thrilled, Amrita not so much. For a long while her dialogue with him consists mostly of “Shut up!” and “Idiot!” You know the drill. Her father assigns Shamsher to escort her and her friend Countess Sophia (Helen) around when Sophia visits, an excellent excuse for pretty scenery and knitwear: and the aforementioned and justifiably famous dance-off. Thanks to his burgeoning love for Amrita, being cared for tenderly for the first time in his life by his “Maa,” and working hard at his job as ADC, Shamsher sleeps well at night, has given up pills and booze, and is happy for the first time in his life. Then he accompanies the king and Amrita to the wedding of her friend Ratna (Praveen Choudhary). To say that he is surprised at the sight of the groom is an understatement. His father, thinking himself without an heir, has decided to marry the girl he had wanted Shamsher to marry. He manages to escape his father’s notice, but both of the greedy Zanowars see him. Although he eludes them they are determined to find their dead Prince’s doppelganger. Meanwhile, Amrita’s father has noticed her attraction to his second ADC and sends his first ADC to first fire him and then get him out of the way. Dacoits hired by the first ADC set upon Shamsher one night and beat him nearly to death. While he is recovering, the two Zanowars finally track down his whereabouts. When Shamsher’s father dies a couple of months after his marriage to Ratna and her greedy brother (Ajit! seriously the Goodness of this cast never ends!) makes plans to crown her Queen, they approach Shamsher with a scheme: he will impersonate the lost Shamsher and split the wealth with them. They don’t believe him when he tells them that he IS the real Shamsher. Disgusted by the greed of the Zanowars and Ratna and her brother; determined to side with the Indian government which wants to abolish the Princely States and free the people of his kingdom; and equally resolved to protect Shanti from ever knowing the truth about her real son’s fate, Shamsher decides to go along with them for now and tells Shanti that they have offered him a job. Will Ratna and her brother believe he is the real Prince? Will Zanowars One and Two ever realize the truth? Can Shamsher save his kingdom from being looted, and free his people AND keep Shanti in the dark as to his true identity? What will Amrita think—will she believe he’s real or will she think he’s a fake only interested in wealth?
